These days, few coffee companies seem to have as many fans as Madcap Coffee. Whether it's their colorful designs or their excellently-roasted coffee, one usually hears many cheers of affirmation when Madcap is on the table (both topically and literally).

On a recent voyage through Grand Rapids, I had the fortune to have budgeted a hefty slot for a visit to their downtown cafe. Located in a large-windowed corner shop, I found some nearby street parking and made my way over to the white and green building. Inside I found a voluminous space with high ceilings, a brick back wall and tons of wood furnishings. There were plenty of seats amidst the numerous patrons, so after getting settled I got in line to decide the fate of my morning coffee.
After some brief deliberation, I chose an espresso of their 3rd Coast Blend and a pourover of their Kenya Kathakna. The espresso, pulled short with a brown crema, unleashed delicious flavors of bittersweet cocoa, lime, slight nutmeg, rye whiskey and some rhubarb, making for a sweet, bright pull. The pourover similarly knocked my socks off, with notes of shortbread, apricot jam, spinach, apple, fresh brick-oven bread and slight sunflower seed, making for a subtilely explosive and equally sumptuous brew.
In the midst of devouring my coffee and enjoying the downtime, before I knew it my time at Madcap had concluded. Thus, I too only can offer praise of this Michigan coffee fixture. When you're in Grand Rapids, make sure to pop in for a visit and some great coffee at Mad Cap.
