I have had my eye on the area around Charleston, West Virginia for several years now. Along with the progressive revitalization in the city itself, the surrounding countryside adds plenty of beautiful scenery and bucolic towns perfect for recreational detours. I finally found a perfect window to head west and arrived in the capital one sunny afternoon, tired from the drive and thirsty for a good cup of coffee. Hearing about a newer establishment in the West Side neighborhood, I landed at Void Coffee Company ready to try out their wares.

The outside of the building is sharp and simple, consisting of a wall of tinted windows outlined in a brick frame. Inside, there exists both a front and back seating area, broken up by a spacious center coffee bar. The surrounding decor is minimal, with a spattering of colorful frames and lots of white lighting.

As for coffee, they use Richmond's Lamplighter Coffee for their beans and a creative approach to their beverages. The espresso menu is broken down elementally (earth, wind, fire and water) with a fifth mystery option called The Void. I went with Fire, a shot of espresso served with an orange slice and sparkling water, as well as a cup of the Tall Bike blend via batch brew. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, black tea, raspberry, vanilla, cream and almond milk; overall a delicious infusion that paired beautifully with the orange slice. The filtered coffee also proved tasty, with notes of pear, milk, buttered cracker, rye bread, poppy seed and a little creamsicle in a medium body.

After talking to the barista for a good while about local coffee, I was off to further explore the surrounding area. If you happen upon Charleston, definitely stop by Void Coffee Company for a unique coffee experience.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
