Double Knot

Until recently, I never realized how much an izakaya was missing in my life. The equivalent of a tavern or pub, izakayas became popular watering holes in Japan along main routes during the late eighteenth century. Today, these Japanese establishments serve far more than sake, with some offering light fare along with various beverages, while others serve "an all you can consume" option with a set time limit.

My interest in izakayas was awakened by a visit to Double Knot, one of Philadelphia's more popular restaurants within the past two years. Walking in, this swanky venue has two floors: a large, classy ground floor housing daytime fare and a coffee menu fueled by Elixr Coffee Roasters, as well as a subterranean level boasting an intimate, speak-easy vibe with rich, decor and a larger, often-praised menu.

Since I made my visit during early lunch on a weekday, only the top floor was open. Having my sights on coffee, I ordered an espresso of the Beekeeper blend from their Modbar and a pourover of an Ethiopian Konga. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, trumpeted out chocolate, apple, strawberry, romaine and croissant, proving smooth and bright. The pourover also lit bright, juicy fireworks of blueberry, nougat, wheat, passionfruit, rose tea and tomato in a light body.

While I still need to make a trip back to sample the food side of Double Knot, if it's as good as the coffee, I can see why they have such popularity. If you're near 13th and Sansom, definitely make a beeline for this coffee-rich izakaya.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!

You can always find this place packed on a weekend night and sometimes they host parties that you can't get into, but other than that happening every once in a while this is the place to be. The Chicago event venues have nice upstairs and down stairs area.
