18 Grams Coffee Lab

How I still wish I liked bicycling! I like the idea of the exercise, I like the idea of being dependent more on my own muscles for locomotion and I love coffee. Sadly the disconnect for me comes into elements of time and terrain, so for now I will just patronize the bike outfits that offer cafes.

One of the prettiest of bike coffeee shops I have been to is 18 Grams Coffee Lab in Culpeper. Situated in a small strip mall in the midst of town, 18 Grams has a minimalist exterior with a sleek interior. The shop is bifurcated into a bike portion and a cafe portion, with the cafe full of charm and polish.

As for coffee the day of my visit, the beans come from Black and White out of North Carolina, so I settled on an espresso of a single origin Burundi and a drip of a Colombian. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, cherry, sugar cookie, clementine, cream and a little romaine, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee also made for a delightful infusion, with toothsome notes of honey, grape, birthday cake, orange marmalade, passion fruit and caramel.

After polishing off the beverages and adding a delicious pizza across the parking lot at the brewery, I had to bid adieu to the shop with the all too familiar pining for a bike habit to accompany my coffee. If you happen to be in Culpeper, check out 18 Grams.
