It's not often that one experiences a coffee shop at a trade show, but such was the case with Coffee Fest some years ago. Trying a different form of competition, they tried a Best Coffeehouse competition and it was at such a NYC competition I ran into Mudhouse. Not having been to their native Charlottesville, I was blown away by their coffee and skill and vowed to one day make it to their Virginia shop.

Finally just recently, I was able to get to their downtown location, a beautiful old cafe in a pedestrian mall. Arriving later in the afternoon, I had the shop mostly to myself. The interior has a nice mixture of exposed rafters, wall art and strategic lighting to make it feel like a mixture of an older west coast shop paired with a sleek cafe of current trends.

As for coffee, I ordered an espresso of their Intention blend and a drip coffee of Sugar Hollow. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, caramel, strawberry, passion fruit, wheat and a little romaine, proving super sweet and smooth. The drip coffee also made for a dynamic brew, with sweet notes of lemon, cornbread, sweet tea, nougat, whole milk and buttercream frosting.

Sadly, I was in a bit of a rush so I didn't have much time to loiter, but my long-awaited visit lived up to my hopes. When you're in the area of this shop or one of their many others, make sure to visit a Mudhouse location.
