Rhythms Coffee

The music scene is what originally drew me to coffee houses. I recall back in high school, going to different open mic nights on weekends to hang with friends, not caring all that much for the quality of my drink, just that I could easily afford $1.50 for drip coffee. Sadly, few coffeehouses carry on the tradition of live music these days, never mind stay open past 2 PM on a Friday night.

One exception of the lot is Rhythms Coffee. Situated in the city of Olympia, this coffee shop goes the extra mile and bills itself as a live music venue. The shop has a cozy footprint, with some neon in the window and some exterior seating for warmer weather. Inside, the shop is an eclectic mix of musical memorabilia, instruments (mainly a piano) and an overall pleasant aesthetic.

As for coffee, they served up Blossom Coffee Roasters. On the day of my visit (I failed to time it during a show), I went with a single origin Ethiopian for my espresso and a Papua New Guinea for the drip. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, tangerine, blondie, passion fruit and a little mineral water, proving sweet and effervescent. The drip coffee also made for a solid infusion, with toothsome notes of strawberry, nougat, cherry soda, caramel and bib lettuce.

After enjoying my drinks and admiring the space, I had to be on my way, slightly sad I had not been present for a performance. Nonetheless, I remain undaunted as I hope to return one evening for a solid cup of coffee and some local talent. If you ever happen to be near Olympia, definitely check out Rhythms Coffee.
