The land along the northeast edge of Pennsylvania that borders New York is both a pretty and curious area. Dotted with many quaint towns, I found the region to be an odd mix of bucolic scenery juxtaposed with herds of day-trippers (mostly) from the surrounding metropolitan centers.

One cozy, bustling hamlet full of visitors was that of Callicoon, a pretty river town with a permanent population of 206 and filled with interesting shops aplenty. The cafe that caught my attention was The Kitchen Table Cafe, a welcoming shop situated on Lower Main Street. Inside, the shop had plenty of seating with practically every spot spoken for, outfitted with creative decor of art and suspended coffee cups.

As for coffee, they serve Copper Horse Coffee and a couple other roasters. The morning of my visit, I had an espresso of Clock Tower and a drip of Carriage House, both blends from Copper Horse. The espresso, pulled to a medium volume with brown crema, smacked of dark chocolate, cream, almond, soft pretzel and pear, proving deep and sweet. The drip proved toothsome and a tad lighter in profile, with notes of cream, chocolate, root beer, vanilla, bran and oolong tea.

After enjoying my beverages, the road beckoned and we headed south along the Delaware, down to the next border village. If you happen to be in the area of Callicoon and looking for a good cup of coffee, head over to The Kitchen Table Cafe.
