A college town without great coffee nearby is a sad educational prospect. Personally, my alma mater still lacks a great coffee option abutting campus (though there's one a short drive away), so when I visit towns harboring an institution of higher education without a good local coffee shop, I definitely feel a pang of shared sorrow for its students.

Conversely, I greatly envy towns like Newark, Delaware that have great coffee readily available to their collegiate population. A little while ago, I was driving through town on the way to visit some family and was able to make a visit to a Newark coffee gem called Little Goat Coffee Roasting Co. Situated in a small house next to the University of Delaware, Little Goat offers a convenient space for college students and residents alike to grab some great coffee.
Visiting prior to the pandemic, I walked into their cozy shop and ordered up an espresso of their Espresso Blend and a drip coffee of an Ethiopian Sidamo single origin. The espresso, pulled medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon zest, cream, grapefruit, pound cake, a little cheesecake and molasses, proving deep and sweet. The drip coffee made for a brighter cup, with notes of blueberry, nougat, bing cherries, mineral water and apple juice in a light body.
While I don't get to Newark a whole lot, I look forward to visiting Little Goat again the next time I wander through town. Whether you are a fortunate student at the university, a local or just passing through, definitely stop by Little Goat for some great coffee.
