At the risk of sounding obvious, I greatly delight in visiting new places. In my younger days I yearned for distant lands that required air travel, but now that I'm a little older with numerous kids (plus the yoke of COVID), I have managed to keep my explorative spirits high with some local road trips.

My first expedition earlier this summer was to the area around Climax, a little northeast of Pittsburgh. Rustic and full of outdoor attractions, I managed to find a great coffee shop called Canyon Coffee Co. right in neighboring New Bethlehem. Walking inside, the shop is cozy yet open, with plenty of seating on the main floor and upper balcony/foyer.

As for coffee, they offer multiple roasters, and I ended up choosing an espresso of Commonplace's Perpetual and a drip of a single origin Brazil from Mechanic. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, orange zest, lime, cream, some malt and a touch of sage, proving smooth and bright. The drip also provided a tasty bravado, with notes of milk chocolate, pear, rocket, sarsaparilla and vanilla in a smooth, medium body.

After polishing off my beverages, I found my way to the woods and streams for some well-needed recreation. Whether you live nearby or you're passing through, check out Canyon Coffee Co. in New Bethlehem.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
