The last time I went through Spokane, I didn't even get a chance to leave the car. Sadly, I was fused to a schedule, the victim of my own poor planning, with only enough time for a late-night airport stop to collect my friend on our way west to Ellensburg. As I looked at the city lights in my rearview mirror, I vowed that next time I would make more time for Spokane.

Fast forward thirteen years, I finally had an opportunity to visit Spokane properly. Weary from my drive east from Seattle, I sought out some good coffee as my first order of business. Due to the late hour and my options being fewer, I was fortunate to find an open downtown location of a shop I had long long hoped to visit: Indaba Coffee. Having heard positive things over many years, I was glad to finally stroll through their doors and into one of their fine shops. This location at 518 W Riverside Ave possessed vaulted ceilings, a giant central coffee bar and plenty of seating all around the shop.

As for coffee, I settled upon an espresso of their High Drive blend and a pour over of a single origin Kenyan. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, tasted of chocolate, smoky lemon, basil and berries, proving sweet and balanced. The pour over also delivered fireworks, with bright notes of cherry, blueberry, dark chocolate, vanilla coke, cream and a touch of malt.

After polishing off my drinks and grabbing some nearby sushi, I felt quite satisfied with my first coffee stop in Spokane. If you are in town for a short stop or a long visit, make sure to check out one of Indaba's many locations for some great coffee.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
