For the three long years my wife and I spent in Syracuse, we tried to make the most of our geography and visit all of the nifty towns in the area. Looking back, we failed quite deplorably, as we only went for the crowd favorites like Ithaca and Watkins Glen. Now I look at the map of New York and see so many intriguing spots we've had to make up since we moved south.

One of those nifty places is Penn Yan. Once home to the Universal Friend and now home to many horse-utilizing Mennonites, the area offers plenty of beautiful scenery as well as a pleasant downtown situated just north of Lake Kueka. In the town is a coffee shop fittingly called Amity Coffee Co., a well-reputed establishment that stood as the main lure pulling me to visit.

Inside the shop is beautifully arrayed, with wood floors, brick walls and soothing lighting. The front of the space has a beautiful counter, with the long footprint extending far back, allowing for a variety of seating throughout. As for coffee, they offer a variety of roasters, including Gimme!, Partners and Tandem, with my choices settling on an espresso of Gimme's Leftist and the sole drip option, a darker coffee blend from Partners. The espresso, pulled short with light blonde crema, smacked of chocolate, lime, croissant, sesame, pear and a little almond milk, proving sweet and satisfying. The drip coffee proved thicker, with notes of heavy cream, pretzel, malt, apple, tootsie roll, peanuts and a little pepper in a heavy body.

While I couldn't hang out long due to a rigid schedule that day, I definitely was pleased to find this beautiful gem in the finger lakes. If you happen to be in the area or you seek out a cozy destination, check out Penn Yan and the gorgeous digs of Amity Coffee Co.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
