HEY! Cafe / HEY Coffee Co

Subject: HEY Coffee Co / Hey! Cafe
Location visited: New Orleans, LA

Rating: 6+ [see key]

Were I to pick the most colorful city I have visited, it would likely be New Orleans. Full of vibrantly painted houses and Mardi Gras parades, NOLA sports a wide variety of palettes.

Naturally, some of the city coffeeshops would be amongst the most wildly shaded shops in the country. One of my favorite brightly-decored shops while in town was HEY Cafe!, just west of the Garden District on Magazine Street. Having a second shop (called HEY Coffee Co) north near the Lafite Greenway, this original outpost had a zany, bohemian yet youthful feel to it.

As for coffee, I settled upon their Hello blend for espresso and a single origin Peru for drip coffee. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of lime, blood orange, ginger candy, mineral water and a bit of basil, proving sweet and balanced. The drip coffee also made fireworks, with thick notes of honey, biscuits, sweet pear preserves, heavy cream, cashew and romaine in a medium body.

As I finished up my drinks, I found myself all together downcast to leave such a lovely shop. Nonetheless, the next time I'm in town I'm sure I will be back. Whether you're a local or in town for Mardi Gras, take a trip to one of HEY's two locations for some great coffee and a bit of local color.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
