While everyone dreams of vacations being in far-off and exotic places, sometimes the most relaxing ones exist in your backyard. Recently I had a few days to spend with the family and we decided to keep it local and head north to the Adirondacks.

Making our way North from New Jersey, we took backroads shortly into New York, partially for scenery and partly to make a stop in Kingston. Originally a Dutch settlement, the city has lots of interesting spots upon which to stumble. As far as coffee, my sights were on a relatively new place called Village Coffee and Goods.

Located amidst what seemed like a newly revitalized part of town, Village resides in a cozy structure facing railroad tracks. Inside, the cafe is beautifully arrayed, full of merchandise, art and a healthy amount of seating.

As for coffee, they utilize Partners Coffee out of Brooklyn. I settled upon an espresso of the Flatiron blend and a drip coffee of a single-origin Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of milk chocolate, lemon zest, cream, blood orange, a little mozzarella and a touch basil, proving balanced and thick. The Ethiopian also proved delicious, with notes of blackberry jam, pear, wheat, cola, raw sugar and baby bib in a light body.

While I definitely could have stuck around, the open road beckoned and promises of theme parks were fresh in my children's mind. whether you live in town where you're passing through, definitely stop at Village Coffee and Goods.
