When a great concept meets a unique space, nifty things can happen. It doesn't happen a lot, as I have seen many a great concept in a sad, ill-fitting structure as well as lackluster concepts in beautiful spaces, but every now and then both boxes are checked. One of the most recent I witnessed was a late-night cookie and coffee shop serving up their wares out of a spiffy building in Boone.

Located a stones throw from Appalachian State in the mountains of North Carolina, Blue Deer Cookies serves up cookies, ice cream and coffee from a cafe that boasts three floors, each floor having access from an interior stairway as well as a straight avenue of cement steps abutting the shop. The cafe is well-decorated with lovely interior spaces as well as a great roof deck overlooking the landscape.

As for coffee, they serve up Local Lion of Boone. The evening of my visit, I went with an espresso and drip of the Blue Deer Blend. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, vanilla ice cream, lemon, sugar cookie, raspberry and candied walnut, proving sweet and bright. The drip coffee also made for a delightful cup, with notes of cream, sweetened bread, vanilla, apple, nougat and strawberry in a medium body.

While I desired to linger, the day was late and I needed to rise early the next day. But the next time I am in the area, I will be sure to visit a Blue Deer location for some coffee and sweets.
