I never knew how much of a love affair southerners have with donuts and coffee. Growing up in the northeast surrounded by donuts dunked in mediocre joe, I was enamored with the many wonderful takes different southern cities had with great coffee and tremendous donuts. My favorite donut enterprise in Kentucky would be a multi-location operation I recently stumbled upon, a place called North Lime Coffee and Donuts. 

Finding their North Limestone location on West Loudon most convenient, I stopped one sunny morning to pick up an assortment of donuts and try out the coffee. The exterior offers large windows amidst a clean brick facade, while the inside boasts a tidy dining room fitted with a huge seating area and a voluminous bar.

As for the beverages ordered that day, I settled upon an espresso of the Alchemy blend and a single origin Colombian via drip, both coffees from Deeper Roots. The espresso, pulled to a medium volume with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, vanilla, almond, caraway and cream, proving sweet and sultry. The drip coffee also made for a great infusion, with smooth notes of honey, oats, whole milk, apple juice and grape leaves.

After enjoying my coffee, I also tried out a handful of donuts, each one knocking it out of the park. If you happen to be in the Lexington or Louisville area, definitely head over to a North Lime location nearby for excellent coffee and stellar donuts.
