For me, driving the Delmarva Peninsula for coffee purposes can be a bit of gamble depending on the time of year and the road I take. Often times I have plenty of time to seek one out but it's late Friday evening or Sunday afternoon, while other times I will be near the shore and a seasonal shop will be shuttered.

Fortunately, one sunny day recently, I found myself to be in Berlin just in time to try out On What Grounds? Coffee House located in the beautiful downtown. Situated in a cozy, brick shop on North Main Street, the coffeehouse was not having inside seating that day so my order was all for take-away. Inside, the shop that normally has a variety of seating, was designed that day to get people their orders and have them head back outside.

Fortunately the day was gorgeous, so grabbing my drinks for a walk around town was preferred. I settled upon an espresso of Black Cat and a single origin Mexican via drip, both from Intelligentsia. The espresso, pulled to a medium volume with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon, cream, sea salt, spinach and sweet corn, proving smooth, sweet and bright. The drip coffee also made for a delicious infusion, with notes of vanilla wafers, whipped cream, baked apple, fresh bread, brown sugar and peach tea.

Thus after finishing my drinks and strolling the streets of Berlin, I hopped back into my car headed north quite pleased with the respite. If you happen to be near Ocean City, Maryland or driving the peninsula, definitely make a stop at On What Grounds? Coffee House.
