Coffee shops run by or existing within churches come in all manner of quality. Some do a decent job with limited resources/investment, and some I wish were more open to feedback/betterment. But occasionally, a community is fortunate enough to have a coffee entity that seems to take things seriously, and in those instances, such a rarity shines like a beacon.

So seems to be the case with Joyhouse Coffee, run out of Evangel Church in North Dakota. On a trip through the area, I was fortunate to be able to stop at their Bismark location for a quick respite, and while the church sits in a bustling part of town, the place was easy to find and the parking lot was fairly spacious. The exterior had plenty of outdoor options for nice days (complete with playground), while the interior boasted a shared lobby with the church, offering various seating and darling decor.

As for coffee, they use local roaster Mighty Missouri. On the day of my visit, I ordered up an espresso the Beam blend and a single origin Guatemala via drip. The espresso, pulled to a medium volume with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemon zest, caramel, pomegranate, arugula and sesame seed, proving smooth and balanced. The drip coffee also made for a delightful brew, with sweet notes of apple juice, vanilla pound cake, cream cheese, cola and bran.

While my time at the cafe was fairly short, I definitely would revisit in a heartbeat the next time I am in the area. If you're seeking out delicious coffee out in the Bismark area, definitely head over to a Joyhouse Coffee location.
