While I have traveled by Wilkes-Barre multiple times, I never had the opportunity to stop there until recently. While driving south, I detoured to this northeastern PA city to see the downtown and grab some coffee at a local establishment that had caught my eye, a place called Abide Coffeehouse.

Situated in a large retail shop one block from the river, Abide offers a space full of beautiful furniture in a space stradling vintage and modern aesthetics. The weather was rainy that morning, so I was happy to get out of the damp, and despite the glow of flourescent lamps, the interior was both warm and inviting.

As for the coffee, Abide roasts their own and after some brief deliberation, I decided upon an espresso and drip coffee of the same single origin Brazil. The espresso, pulled to a medium volume with brown crema, smacked of vanilla, smoky root beer, soft pretzel and toffee, proving stout and sweet. The drip proved a bit brighter, with notes of red apple, caramel, croissant, lemon zest, romaine and some cola.

While I had little time to dawdle, I did enjoy my brief time at Abide and look forward to a return visit the next time I pass through. Thus, if you live locally or plan on making a detour into historic Wilkes-Barre, definitely give Abide Coffeehouse a visit.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
