Second Wind Coffee

Driving south out of the Adirondacks truly jolts you back to reality. One minute there abounds mountain majesty as far as the eye can travel, and the next it's nothing but rolling farmland and less majestic vistas (though it is still pretty of course by Jersey standards).

Fortunately, there lies other beauty outside the mountains, specifically in the manner of coffee establishments. After leaving the Great Sacandaga Lake, I found myself in Johnstown on rumor of great coffee in a place called Second Wind. Situated behind a beautiful storefront, Second Wind has a voluminous cafe pleasantly arrayed with a colorful palate and blessed with plenty of seating.

As for the coffee, they roast their own beans. After discussing with the barista, I decided upon an espresso of their 3rd Wave blend and a drip coffee of their House. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, lemonade, lavender, raspberries, cream and a little brown rice, proving sweet and creamy. The batch brew of the House proved a little darker than I like it but it still made for a good cup, with notes of root beer, vanilla, maple bar, a touch of pepper, some roast beef and some skim milk in a deep, medium body.

Happy to have found such a coffee outpost near the mountains, I walked out with expectations of a return journey in the future. If you happen to be nearby or passing through, definitely add Johnstown to your drive for some coffee at Second Wind.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
