There are a few days each year where going out for coffee is more about escaping the heat than getting a cup of joe. These last few days across much of the USA has reminded many of the glory of a great air conditioner, especially when cold air is pumping throughout a great coffeehouse.

Such was the case one weekend morning when I was in Phoenix and the high was closer to 115 F than I would have liked. Some compatriots and I were looking for a good cup of coffee to start the day, preferably in a well-chilled environment, and fortunately for us Futuro offered that perfect option right nearby. Situated in a single-story structure in the middle of the city, Futuro occupies a shared space (all called Palabra) that also houses a modern art gallery and a salon.

As for coffee, the serve Heart out of Portland. After some deliberation, I settled on the espresso negro and a pour over of a single origin Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of lemon, chocolate, passion fruit, a little corn chip and lavender, proving bright and sumptuous all around. The pour over also made for a mighty fine cup, doling out sweet notes of raspberry, grape leaves, sugar cookie, light cream, orange and black tea in a light body.

After basking in the minimalistic vibes and cold air for an hour, my party departed to embark on some other fun that did not involve to much sweating. Thus, if you seek a great cup of coffee in a unique and fresh atmosphere, check out Futuro in lovely, sunny Phoenix.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
