The Mine Cafe

Subject: The Mine Cafe
Location: Jerome, AZ
WiFi?: yes
Rating: 5+ [see key]

Not since watching the aerial shots of Minis Tirith in the Lord of the Rings have I seen a town as married to a hillside as Jerome. In the high places of Arizona exists a curious municipality with levels instead of avenues and winding streets exceedingly fun to navigate (except when there's ice). Yet despite its unorthodox layout and engineering challenges, Jerome still stands pretty much the same as it has these last hundred years, albeit a little less populated now then in its heyday.

In addition to the intriguing allure of the Jerome and its mining history, there also happens to be good coffee at The Mine Cafe. Located in the lower level of a white concrete building, the cafe is wonderfully cozy and outfitted with a nice mix of current as well as vintage elements, coming together to form a pleasant space for congregational dining.

The cafe serves a full coffee bar along with a full menu of other sumptuous-smelling fare. That morning I got the works: an espresso of Velvet Lotus and a batch brew of an organic Mexican single origin (both from local roaster Ren Tao) followed by a hearty egg and brisket breakfast. The espresso, pulled long with a blonde-ish brown crema, smacked of lemon candy, corn chip, orange peel and collard greens, proving tasty and bright. The drip coffee also proved delicious, with notes of honey, biscuits, pear, romaine, pancakes with maple syrup and a little nougat in a medium body. Lastly, the breakfast delivered an amazing protein-rich feast.

To put it mildly, Jerome and The Mine Cafe should be future hit for anyone passing even remotely close by. Just make sure to leave enough time in the visit to walk the town and see the surrounding sites, as few places exist like this odd town built into a hilltop.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
