Three Ships Coffee

When my sister first moved to Virginia Beach some years ago, I remember having an excruciating time finding a good place to grab coffee between Williamsburg and the ocean. But then around 2015, I came across a young company called Three Ships and ever since, it seems the availability of good coffee in Virginia Beach has been slowly blossoming.

Having only imbibed their coffee at home or at one of their wholesale accounts, I made it a point on a recent trip to the nearby town of Hampton to make a detour to their flagship coffee bar and roastery on 19th Street. Arriving late in the morning, I found a spot in the neighboring lot and walked over to their beautifully-painted, one-story brick shop. Inside, the walls are warmly arrayed in wood planks and old nautical trinkets, complimented with plenty of sunlight from their front windows.

Moving onto the coffee, I ordered an espresso of their First Landing blend and a pour over of a Kenya single origin. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, sang of chocolate milk, strawberry, caramel, passion fruit and lime zest, proving bright and beautiful. The pour over also hit me over the moon, with decadent explosions of nougat, strawberry, seaweed salad, croissant, raspberries and a little mineral water.

As I finished up my drinks, I felt a tad depressed that such a fine operation was not closer to my abode. Thus, if you happen to be anywhere near Virginia Beach, absolutely make a stop for some excellent coffee at Three Ships.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
