Speckled Hen

Living in the Philadelphia region means sporadic trips west of the city to the rolling hills of the Lancaster area. Whether your interest is in the amazing food and crafts of the Amish, the smorgasbords or the gorgeous country itself, I have come to love the area west of Sadsburyville.

One of my favorite attractions conveniently nests by the Strasburg Railroad, a gorgeous coffeehouse and eatery known as the Speckled Hen. Located in a large brick structure, this cafe has it all in terms of space and seating, ranging from tons of tables and chairs to a cozy living room to a sunny kid nook (I don't know if it's actually meant to be a kid nook, but my kids think it's a kid nook).

For coffee, they use Passenger Coffee Roasters out of Lancaster, a relatively new but well-received coffee roaster. In ordering, I picked up an espresso of their Stowaway Blend and a pourover of a Burundi single origin coffee. The espresso, pulled short/medium with light brown crema, smacked of vanilla, apple, ginger, toffee, cracker and spinach, making for a tasty (though slightly under-extracted) infusion. The pourover proved gorgeous in all of its ways, with notes of black tea, lemongrass, chocolate, blueberry, some asparagus, a little steak, hibiscus and sugar cookie in a light/medium body.

All around, the PA Dutch countryside greatly benefits from the existence of the Speckled Hen. Definitely stop by, whether you're in the area for trains, corn mazes or some old-fashioned eating/gluttony.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
