Update 11/16/2022: Coffee roasting and bar skill is definitely worth a visit.

Update 11/14/17:
In the past two years, Engrain has started roasting their own coffee and offering a growing line of different coffees, ranging from light to dark.

It's no secret that small towns on the east coast have a devastatingly small amount of great coffee. Chalk it up to the high cost of real estate, or to the low patronage from the give-me-drive-thru-or-give-me-death majority. Whatever the cause, it remains a daunting task to find a quality brew outside of major city limits.

One newly-pioneered outpost in southern New Jersey is a small shop in Pitman called Endgrain Coffee. Sitting on a side street off Broadway, the shop stands out with it's large flag, wooden sign and growing reputation. Inside the shop is chic and spartan, with a pleasant emphasis on natural light and reclaimed wood.

As for coffee, they are the first shop in South Jersey to offer nitrogenated iced coffee (aka "nitro brew") as well as cocktail-esque concoctions like espresso tonics. As for beans, they dish out mainly One Village but also feature coffee from other local roasters of excellence, like Royal Mile and ReAnimator. Looking to lock down the basics, I ordered an espresso of One Village's Nordico and a pourover of ReAnimator's Ethiopia Gera. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, conveyed chocolate, lavender, slight grapefruit, cream and a little spinach in an all around balanced, sweet and full infusion. The pourover had similar fireworks, bursting full of strawberry, hefeweizen, vanilla cake, bran, date and light chicken stock in a light/medium body.

All together, Endgrain has potential to be a great local coffeehouse, a perfect fit for a picturesque locale like Pitman. Make no mistake about it; head straight for Endgrain the next chance you can muster.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!

  2. They definitely made smart choice on how to use the space in that coffee shop. I really like the decor and modern, small tables. I hope they do well!
