Coffeehouse-Five

Saturday mornings are the best time to get out and experience a city. It's one of the few windows in the week where many businesses are open, yet the crowds are mostly sleeping off their prior late-night adventures. Especially if I'm traveling, I can usually get in a full four hours before the streets get crowded with the brunch hordes.

During my AM forays, one thing I love dearly is the Saturday morning coffee stop, usually at a place with hours aimed at ambitious folks like myself. Last I was in Portland, I found coffeehouse doors that opened even before I left my my hotel in a purple gem called Coffeehouse-Five. Located across the street from Portland Community College, I walked into the spacious cafe to find it calm and peaceful, with lots of light streaming from the open windows across the numerous types of seating. Taking root at a large communal table, I plopped down my bag and headed to the swanky counter to get my brews.

That fine morning all the coffee selections haled from Roseline Coffee, a small batch roaster that has drawn many a song of praise. I decided upon an espresso of their Catapult Blend and a pourover of an Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of cherries, watermelon, chocolate, sarsaparilla, a little nutmeg and arugula. The pourover also performed fantastically, with notes of sugared blackberries, buttery croissant, nougat, vanilla and yerba mate in a medium body.

After a leisurely ingestion of the tremendous coffee, I gathered my things now fully equipped to conquer the rest of the morning. Whether you like the early hours of Saturday or you just like coffee all the time, drop by Coffeehouse-Five the next time you're in the area.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
