I am a tremendous fan of the noble pun. What better to insert into a conversation than a clever exploitation of different uses of similar sounding words? I trace my fervent love of witty word play to my days in Montana when I studied under a man who greatly regarded them as the highest form of communication. Forever my eyes have been o-punned.

In my conversations, one of the more important things I have learned is that a pun is great in spontaneous conversation, but often torturous in permanent mediums. One area I often find such im-pun-ity frequented is in coffeehouse names. While there's nothing wrong with dubbing a coffeehouse  "Central Perk" or "Bean There, Digested That", such actions take a bold risk since, like most humor, some people (and businesses) can pull it off, and others not so much.

One example of a pun-gent name that seems to work well for a local coffee establishment is a place called Hebrews Coffee in Springfield, Missouri. Besides the genius of using a Biblical pun in a strongly Christian town, the place holds its mustard because of its skill in slinging quality coffee.

One misty afternoon, I made my way to their location within a brick strip mall in the southern portion of Springfield. Inside, the place is voluminous and slightly warm, with lots of dark colors and tons of places to pull up a chair. And while many pieces of the decor are slightly dated, the ambiance is still pleasant and inviting.

For coffee, I found their shelves lined with PT's Coffee and Madcap. I ended up ordering two Madcaps: an espresso of their Third Coast and a pourover of an Ethiopian. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, sang of blood orange, buttered cracker, ginger, sour cream and bittersweet cocoa, making for a balanced and sweet infusion. The pourover similarly rocked my socks, with blasts of fruit punch, passion fruit, corn bread, caramel and hibiscus.

All in all I greatly enjoyed my Hebrews experience. If you happen to be in Springfield, whether you care for puns or not, check out this vibrant shop with great coffee.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
