Gralehaus

Subject: Gralehaus
Location: Louisville, KY
WiFi?: Yes
Rating: 6+ [see key]

In traveling around, I have only had the fortune of staying at a handful of bed and breakfasts. Realistically, as much of my travel is either business or with small children, it's hard to get away to such digs, but when I do, I really try to find a place that's worth the experience.

One place that is poised to be a pleasant stay is Gralehaus in Louisville. Currently operating as a local coffee and brunch outfit with lots of tasty culinary facets, Gralehaus is located in an solid brick house on Baxter St, connected by courtyard to the Holy Grale (owned by the same folks). While the bed side of the equation is on the way, they are holding down the fort with locally-sourced creations and delicious coffee.

Immensely curious as to the wonders reported, I strolled down the lane one sleepy Saturday morning to grab some coffee. I beat most folks out of bed, so I had the place to myself and my wee son. Inside, the atmosphere is snug and warm, with dark woods, exposed brick and a dense counter fixed in center making it feel somewhat old world. Notably, the counter comes equipped with a Modbar espresso machine and coffee a la Intelligentsia

In ordering, I chose an espresso of a Colombia and a pourover of a Guatemala. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of sauvignon blanc, heavy chocolate, cherry soda, jelly and almond croissant, all together manifesting deliciously and explosively. The pourover also rang out, with notes of strawberry, buttered biscuit, nougat, slight basil and notes of nutmeg and pound cake on the end of sweet and hearty coffee with a broth-like mouthfeel.

Though I don't often get to Louisville, I have my eye out for the future of this fine establishment. If you're in town and seek a great cup of coffee, brunch and/or (in the future) a bed, check out Gralehaus.

These wonderful folks made this visit possible in part. Make sure to check them out!
